Matt’s Aussie Relocation Story
“Relocating to any foreign country is an undertaking not to be underestimated.
Whilst at university I studied for a year abroad, and only went from Manchester to Paris. But it was tougher than I could ever have imagined. However, I returned home, finished university and settled in to working life in London. For a long time my experiences in Paris offered me a benchmark of toughness that meant I was un-phased by my other challenges – finals, unemployment, etc.
However, this benchmark has recently been completely blown out of the water.
February of this year my partner’s mother fell very unwell, resulting in our decision to rapidly up sticks and move to Melbourne from London. Whilst the decision to do it was remarkably easy, the reality has offered a significantly larger number of challenges.
These include: bank accounts, visas, accommodation and, of course, work.
I was very lucky, my UK employer offered me a remote working short term contract which lifted the burden of income. Equally, my partner’s family offered a roof whilst we hunted for a flat. However, one thing that no amount of help could support me through was the actual relocation, to the other-side of the world, leaving behind all family, friends and things I know – 3 months in and it is still tough.
However, regular Skypes, my blog and already planning family visits has made it surmountable.
To anyone looking to relocate, I wish the very best and encourage you. Tough as it is, I continue day in day out to think “relocate to the other side of the world, and start a new life – no problem!” – and it feels so cool! ”
Thanks for sharing with us Matt.
