What do you know about New Zealand? Did you know that it is one of the first places in the world to see the New Day? Did you know that there are three different main languages used throughout the country? Did you know that every year, on the 6th February, the country comes together to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi back in 1840?
It is this day of the founding of New Zealand that we wanted to push the kiwi fruit into the spotlight. Parents are always looking for more ways to encourage their children to eat more fruit and vegetables, but despite its presence in all the biggest supermarkets, the furry fruit is not as popular as we would like. The defining agricultural product of New Zealand, the delicious sweet green kiwi is packed full of vitamin C. It is great for the digestion, blood pressure and immunity and is bursting with antioxidants that help protect your cells from damage. It may be small, but the humble kiwi fruit sure can pack a punch and help keep your body moving!
With that in mind, John Mason International sent 500 kiwis into local schools as a way to encourage more children to enjoy the tasty super-fruit and help them to reach their five-a-day target. To our surprise, many children had never even seen a kiwi fruit before, and we were delighted to find that many of them loved the sweet taste and would be keen to eat them again. Others, however, are yet to be convinced.
We also spoke to some children outside of the playground and invited them to taste the kiwi fruit. Below is a video recording their responses, which makes for very funny viewing!
Sales and Marketing Director, Simon Hood was delighted with the reaction to the native New Zealand fruit: “We know how good kiwis are for us, and we know that we need to be doing more to encourage children to eat more of their five-a-day. With child obesity on the rise, we hope something as simple as a delicious kiwi can go some way to helping improve the health of our country – starting with the smallest members of the population first! Reactions were very mixed, but we know that perseverance is key when it comes to trying new things.”
Waitangi Day might be over for 2018, but New Zealand is still calling! If you are looking to move over to the land of the kiwi, John Mason International can help!
