At John Mason International, we believe in making a difference—not just for families moving abroad but for those facing challenges closer to home. That’s why we were proud to participate in Caudwell Children’s Christmas in Manchester event, a festive celebration that also showcased the incredible impact of the Shaping Futures programme.
This event wasn’t just about Yuletide cheer—it was a heartfelt demonstration of how generosity and community can transform lives. Caudwell Children’s work, supporting disabled and autistic children across the UK, aligns perfectly with our belief that everyone, regardless of abilities or background, deserves equal opportunities to thrive.
The Challenge
While 53.6% of all disabled people in the UK are in employment, only 30% of autistic people hold jobs, according to the BBC (28th February 2024). Ambiguous application processes and traditional interview formats often create barriers, leaving talented individuals excluded from the workforce.
Many employers feel unprepared to provide the support and accommodations neurodivergent employees may need. This lack of understanding prevents countless young people from unlocking their potential and contributing their unique strengths to society.
Empowering Through Action
During the Christmas in Manchester event, young people from the Shaping Futures programme played a pivotal role in organising and hosting the day. From greeting guests to managing logistics, they gained hands-on experience that strengthened their organisational, communication, and social skills—all while building their confidence in a professional setting.
For many of these students, Shaping Futures has been transformative. Prior to joining the programme, they often lacked confidence and had little exposure to workplace environments. Through tailored sessions, they are gaining the essential skills needed to take their next steps—whether that’s applying for a job, gaining work experience, or volunteering.
We were particularly impressed by the efforts of Harry, Odair, Bailey, Katie, and Rhys, who worked tirelessly to bring the event to life. Their dedication and enthusiasm showcase the success of the programme and the remarkable potential of neurodivergent individuals when given the right support and opportunities.
Simon Hood, Executive Director of John Mason International, shared his thoughts on the day:
“It was truly inspiring to see the young people from Shaping Futures take ownership of such a meaningful event. Their hard work, confidence, and teamwork were on full display, and it’s a testament to the incredible impact of the programme. At John Mason International, we’re proud to support initiatives like this that not only empower individuals but also help change perceptions and build a more inclusive future.”
John Mason International’s Pledge
Moved by the impact of the Shaping Futures programme, John Mason International was honoured to make a pledge at the event to help fund this life-changing work. Our donation will cover the costs for one neurodivergent young person, aged 16–25, to participate in the programme.
This is more than just financial support—it’s a commitment to investing in the future of neurodivergent talent. By supporting initiatives like Shaping Futures, we aim to help shift societal attitudes, break down barriers, and ensure that every individual has access to the opportunities they deserve.
A Testament to Transformation
The Shaping Futures programme not only equips participants with employability and life skills but also plays a crucial role in changing public perceptions. By creating a more inclusive workforce, it paves the way for a society where everyone has the chance to succeed.
The impact of the event was amplified by the generosity of all who attended. Together, we raised an impressive £7,757 to support ongoing initiatives, helping to meet the unique needs of disabled and autistic children across the UK.
Looking Ahead
As we reflect on this magical event, we’re filled with gratitude for the chance to support such an impactful organisation. Our involvement in Christmas in Manchester is just one example of how we strive to give back to the communities we serve.
From all of us at John Mason International, we wish you a wonderful Christmas filled with love, laughter, and festive cheer. We look forward to continuing to make a difference—together.
