With Paddington 3 delighting cinema audiences across the UK, it’s hard not to dream of marmalade sandwiches and faraway adventures. The story of Britain’s most beloved bear starts in Peru, a land of vibrant culture, stunning scenery, and welcoming communities. It’s no surprise, then, that some Brits are taking inspiration from Paddington and making the leap to South America themselves.
Take Michael, a 36-year-old dad from Birmingham, who packed up his life in 2018 and relocated to Lima with his wife and two boys. Much like Paddington’s journey to London, Michael’s move was motivated by a desire for safety, a fresh start, and a better quality of life.
Swapping Birmingham for Lima: Michael’s Story
Living in Birmingham, Michael and his family faced growing concerns about safety in their neighbourhood. A troubling local incident in 2017 became the catalyst for change. “A man was attacked in the park over something as trivial as not having a lighter,” Michael recalls. “That was the moment I realised I didn’t want my kids growing up there.”
With his wife’s Peruvian roots, the family decided to relocate to her home city of Lima. They built an apartment atop her parents’ house in Miraflores, a lively area known for its community spirit and stunning views. “In Peru, people welcome you with open arms. Even those with very little will invite you into their homes and make you feel like family,” Michael shares.

Life in Peru: Paddington’s Paradise
For Michael, life in Peru offered more than just safety. The cost of living was significantly lower, with housing and dining far more affordable than in the UK. “You can get a home in Miraflores for a fraction of what you’d pay in Birmingham,” Michael explains. “And the food? It’s incredible—ceviche, anticuchos, the works!”
Of course, there were some things he missed. “We couldn’t find Cadbury’s chocolate, and I’d have sold my soul for a decent curry,” he jokes. “But the football culture in Lima more than made up for it—every time Peru played, the whole city would stop. It was magical.”
